Thankful.
In the spirit of gratitude I thought I would share some things I'm feeling grateful for. I try and think about what I'm thankful for everyday, and I have to admit that writing these little lists out always puts me in the best mood. It's a good exercise, and I love having these posts to look back on on a particularly down day to cheer me right up. So, without further ado, here's my list-
1. My family. I feel lucky to be married to my best friend, and even better? He's the greatest father. Everyday I wake up and feel so grateful for Hank, and now that we have sweet Henry in the picture, life just feels...right. I love spending my days with Henry- his laughs and smiles have brought more happiness to me than anything in the world, and I feel like it's so much easier to find positivity in every aspect of life with that little guy calling me mama. Even the worst of days have that bit of goodness in them, and for that I am so thankful. Beyond us three, I'm so thankful for all of my family. We have a solid one, and I try to never, ever forget that.
2. Madeline. Before Henry was born she was the baby of the house, and even though things have completely changed, she is still the sweetest thing in the entire world. We went through a weird transitional phase when Henry first arrived but now we are all back to normal, and she truly is Henry's best friend. It's awesome to watch them play and explore together. Madeline's pretty much in heaven to have a full-time, roll-around-on-the-floor playmate.
3. The basics. A roof over our head, food in our bellies, clean water to drink.
4. My friends. Over this past year my idea of what a friend is and how to be a friend changed a bit, and in that shift I've found myself with a lot less close friends than ever. But this is a good thing. I now have the time and energy to focus on the people in my life that matter, rather than spreading myself thin with too many people. Quality over quantity, and the few that I keep close are some of the best people in the entire world. This past year I've also met and gotten quite close with a few new mama friends, and I adore them, even though they are at least a couple of hours away (and one all the way up the West Coast!). Their daily support and friendship is amazing.
5. My education. Even though I stay home with Henry now, I am so thankful to have been able to attend both college and graduate school. I think back so fondly on my college times, and not just at all the fun my friends and I had socially- I feel like I really learned a lot in all of the classes I took in regards to English. I have such a love for writing, and although that's been a part of me for as long as I can remember, so many of my professors at NAU and so many of the classes I took really helped ignite a deeper passion for it. It think of them every day and feel very grateful to have had that experience, and I'm excited to move forward with all of it.
6. The knowledge and ability to change anything I want. Right now I'm just taking each day for what it is, a chance to be a better wife and mother. I know that if yesterday I was in a snappy mood, today I can change my attitude and be kinder. I know that if I made poor food choices, if I was more lazy than productive, so on and so forth, then right now I can fix that through my actions. In the past I think I would let a bump in the road shake me, thus starting a cycle of more negativity. Now though I'd like to think that proactively moving forward has helped me get closer to becoming that person I want to be, and I'm thankful for this.
7. Health. Everyday I feel thankful for this, because I've seen so many people in my life deal with very hard things. From my Mom's breast cancer to my Dad's heart problems, we recently had a few years that were very difficult. And although everything is good now, going through a lot of what we did together made me really appreciate good health and to never take it for granted.
8. Technology. I love that we are all so connected and I'm able to be in touch with my faraway family and friends whenever I want. I was just emailing with my friend in India- it was 11:30pm and bedtime for her- and I had to sit back for a moment and marvel at how awesome that really is.
9. Having the luxury of being able to even type out a thankful list. Really. There's so much that goes into this little act- a happily napping baby, a computer, electricity, etc. etc.
10. And finally, some little things, both serious and silly: the men and women who serve our country, Netflix, yoga pants, Trader Joe's coming to town, Sons of Anarchy, Oprah, cheese (Gouda and Muenster specifically), Pink Lady apples, my Kindle and getting to read any book instantly, feeling like we are getting even a little bit closer to marriage equality, Martha Stewart Living, this blog, and all of you!
And speaking of you, what are you thankful for? If you post a list on your blog, be sure to link me below so I can go check it out too.
p.s. I have something special I'll be sharing on the blog tomorrow that has been on my mind for awhile. Until then, have a great night and a happy Thanksgiving, if you celebrate!
Thankful on a Sunday (a good day turned bad, turned good again).
Today's been one of those days. It started off innocently enough- we woke up early, got the three of us ready to head to breakfast and the grocery store, normal Sunday stuff. When I got out of bed I was in great spirits, coming off of yesterday's glorious Autumn day, but as the day went on I found a bit of irritability seeping into everything I did and said. I kind of hate when I feel like this, because everything starts to annoy me. It's not fun. So I got kind of quiet and tried my hardest not to ruin everyone else's day too, which as I'm sure you can relate, is all too easy to do.
We got home in time for the 10am Cardinals game, set out some coffee cups and donuts for Hank and his friends in preparation for our weekly Sunday football get-together, then I booked it to the gym. I know myself all too well, and I knew that when I feel like this, the only thing that snaps me out of my funk is some good music, hard cardio, and lots of lifting.
I spent the next two hours ellipticalling and running and lifting and stretching and staring off into space while rudely occupying a weight machine, I'm sure. But guess what? I left feeling GOOD.
So I came home and tried to get a little writing done. I made a quiche. I played with little Henry (even though he was much more interested in playing with all of our friends who were over). I spent time with one of my sweetest girlfriends Adie, sitting at my kitchen counter. We laughed, we talked, we avoided eating donuts, we made ridiculous jokes about "melting butter in a Dutch oven" (had to be there, I guess). I felt good. And so much better.
After our friends all went home we gave Henry a long bath in our big tub, then got him ready for bed and said goodnight. Now we sit here relaxing and I'm so happy that my good day turned bad day, turned out to be such a good day.
And what better way to end a good-bad-good day then to make a gratitude list?
Today I am so thankful for:
Whole Living magazine and their pages of endless inspiration
little feet. and hands. and noses.
Natalie and my girly sleepover and Christmas party we're planning
sliding around in socks on our tile floors
Henry's almost-talking-yet-not-quite amazing-ness
Quorn products (thank you, Michelle!)
knowing that my bad moods will always turn good again
running into old high school friends after 8+ years, and laughing and talking like no time had passed
pizza with half tomato/half pesto sauce
birthday party planning fun
being a bridesmaid in my dear friend Shirley's wedding this next weekend
finding great shoes...at Payless!
the Halloween Party station on Pandora
mini-Heirloom tomatoes in every salad
my husband who makes me laugh all day long
and CHEESE! (gouda, specifically)
How about you? I'd love it if you'd join me, so feel free to link me in the comments. xoxo
Thankful.
{me and my dancing partner, at a wedding a few weeks ago}
Sometimes it's good to stop for a minute, take a step back, and think about all of the good in our lives. I'll be the first to admit that sometimes, in the hustle and bustle of goings and comings, friends and plans and all of that goodness, I forget to take that step back and appreciate it. So right now, as I am sitting here on the couch, watching Hank and Henry play and laugh on our living room floor during Daddy/son time, I thought I would share a short gratitude list, and encourage you to do the same!
Today I am thankful for:
old friends that know you better than anyone
storytime at the library, and watching Henry interact with so many other little ones
the taste of a crisp organic Pink Lady apple, dipped in almond butter
quiet mornings with my baby boy, rocking in the green chair and singing songs
a roof over our head and food in our bellies
finding new blogs to fall in love with
and speaking of food, Greek yogurt with fresh berries. So thankful for that.
four fun weddings to look forward to
a pair of shorts that fit just right
new mama friends and upcoming plans
new mama friends and upcoming plans
chilly evenings made for cardigans
the excitement of longtime friends moving up to our small town
being able to say "my boys" and the happy feeling it gives me
successfully pulling myself out of a terrible mood
thirty extra minutes of sleep
thirty extra minutes of sleep
that feeling of being exactly where I've always wanted to be
Hank, and every little thing about him
...and Mexican food. Lots of gratitude for Mexican food!
How about you? Link back here if you decide to post a list- and have a great night!
Thankful.
Today I am thankful for:
my best friend Sarah. She brightens my day every single day. When someone knows you- really knows you, all the good and all the bad...and accepts you just the way you are, that's such a rare, amazing thing. We've been through so much together and it's neat that we've been side by side through so many stages and changes in our lives. I wish all of you could spend time with her so you could also know what beautiful spirit and huge heart she has. I guarantee she'd make you smile!
our new BOB jogging stroller. Henry and I have been going on early morning runs every since we got this amazing thing from Hank's Dad and Step-Mom. I never thought I could love a baby product so much, but after using our severely lacking Graco stroller, the BOB is such a great change. It rides so well and Henry is so much more comfortable. Our Graco was so finicky about closing properly (most of my friends and family can attest to this), and now that we don't need it anymore I sincerely want to take it out back and go all Office Space on it. Ever see that movie? The printer scene? That's what I'm talking about! But really, I love the BOB. We got the 2011 Revolution with the big wheels if anyone's curious.
Salads. Oh goodness. I cannot get enough of salads lately! My current favorite: spring greens, sliced raw almonds, dried cranberries and balsamic. I just put it all in a tupperware container and shake it up. It's out of this world.
My Mom. I think I only truly realized what an amazing mother I have once I became one myself. I've always appreciated her, but this just takes it to a whole new level. So thankful for this wonderful woman.
Bachelorette Nights. Adie and I usually spend Mondays watching the Bachelor (or this season, The Bachelorette) and it's always such a fun time. We snack, we girl talk, we turn a two-hour show into a five-hour extravaganza. Last night we had the show on pause for a good 3 hours while we talked and talked, and then around 10pm we should get serious and actually watch the episode. And speaking of, if you're a Bachelorette fan, I am loving the recap on Hello Giggles this week!
Lazy weekend afternoons and evenings with Hank and Henry. Nothing is better than strolling around downtown with my boys, and our summers here are just beautiful. I always look forward to the Bluegrass Festival and the Summer Concert Series. To me, there's nothing better than listening to live music on a blanket in the grass.
Rita's Italian Ice. Okay. Now, we definitely (and unfortunately) don't have one of these in Arizona, but in my native New Jersey there are quite a few. Just the promise of a cherry gelati is getting me through my days. We'll be on the East Coast next month and you can bet your bottom dollar I will be enjoying a Rita's every day we're near one.
And finally...this dude. For such obvious reasons. (thanks to Diana for the awesome bib!)
Happy Tuesday, everyone! I'll be back later today with a fabulous giveaway from a very talented artist!
